The club owns a fleet of Optimists, Laser Pico's, Lasers and a Hobie. These can be rented by members during sailing lessons. Adults and children under fifteen years of age take separate lessons. There are usually five students in a group lesson. Sail programs run during the school term for a four week period.
There are two options available for learning to sail at DYC:
- Option 1 - During the school term we run a 4-week group program, this involves 4, 2 hour 1st step beginner lessons, for children 8-15 years on a Saturday morning on an Optimist.
- Option 2 - For children above fifteen years of age to adults we run the same 4-week group program which involves 4 two-hour 1st step (level 1) beginner lessons. These lessons take place weekly on a Friday or Sunday morning, 10-12pm. Laser Pico's are used during these lessons.
A member can sign up for these lessons by completing a booking form at the DYC Office. This ensures the member and / or child is placed on the waiting list. Members on the waiting list will then be contacted before the start of the next four week course to confirm their availability.
If a member or child has already completed some sail training, they will need to contact the Sail Trainer to coordinate which lesson group they can join. The more advanced school children group lessons take place during the week from 3:30-5:30pm.
Private lessons are also available to members. These run during the week, Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10-12 and 1-3pm. Private lessons also take place when there are no other group lessons, usually during school holidays or in the interim periods between 4-week group programs. All private lessons can be booked by contacting the Sail Trainer.
Sailing lessons take place on Tuesdays to Sundays. Three two-hour time slots are allocated each day, namely 10-12pm, 1-3pm, or 3:30-5:30pm. There are no sailing lessons on a Monday. Below is a 2021 lesson time table.
